Dementia in India

Dementia – A silent epidemic

8.8 million Indians live with dementia, accounting for approximately 7.4% of adults aged 60 and above. As life expectancy continues to rise, this number is expected to grow significantly.

Despite this, awareness about dementia or measures to delay or prevent this condition is alarmingly low.

Leading an active lifestyle that includes regular physical activity, mental stimulation, and social engagement has been shown to have a positive impact on brain health and can potentially reduce the risk of dementia.

Explore Dementia Resources

Dementia remains a hidden epidemic in India, much due to ignorance and stigma surrounding the disease. Here’s a repository of resources to help you better understand dementia and its various aspects to guide you on your journey of awareness and support.

What is dementia?

Dementia is an umbrella term for all progressive neurodegenerative conditions that affect the brain and interfere with daily activities. It primarily affects the elderly but is not a normal part of aging. There is currently no cure, but some conditions are reversible.

How to stay mentally fit?

While physical fitness is well-recognized, maintaining cognitive health is equally essential for a fulfilling life, especially as we age. Engaging in brain-boosting activities not only enhances concentration and problem-solving skills but also plays a role in preventing or delaying dementia when combined with other health measures.

5 things you should know:

1. Warning Signs & Symptoms
Dementia presents a range of warning signs including memory loss, difficulty with familiar tasks, language problems, mood and behavior changes, among others, that impact daily life. Recognizing these signs early is essential for timely intervention and support.

2. Causes
Dementia stems from changes in specific brain regions that disrupt the proper functioning of neurons and their connections. Uncover the underlying neurological diseases, vascular disorders, traumatic injuries, infections, and lifestyle choices that may play a role in their development.

3. Risk Factors
Dementia can affect individuals of all ages but is most commonly associated with older adults. Genetics, lifestyle choices, chronic health conditions, head injuries, mental health, and social engagement can impact the likelihood of developing dementia.

4. Diagnosis of Dementia:
Diagnosing dementia involves a comprehensive evaluation process, combining medical history, physical examination, laboratory tests, cognitive assessments, brain imaging, and psychiatric evaluation. It’s a complex journey aimed at uncovering the underlying causes of cognitive difficulties.

5. Prevention
While dementia prevention cannot be guaranteed, there are proactive measures people can take to reduce their risk. Explore strategies to promote brain health, including physical activity, a balanced diet, mental stimulation, chronic condition management, social engagement, and head injury prevention.
